Opinions on Nude Art

Journal Entry: Wed Feb 1, 2012, 4:23 AM

Ramblings...

It's been busy for me of late!
Inbetween taking Jenn up to the resting place of Lord Byron, helping her film some Amnesia cosplay footage, sorting out things for Metrocon and preparing for the SFX Weekender this weekend, I am shattered! Still, the Weekender is going to be wickedawesome, so it's worth it.
Sadly, Jenn can't make it to SFX with me any longer (she has a job interview that she cannot afford to miss), so ~sora1992 will be coming along with me! 8D

-------Gender Roles-------
A nice, varied (and plentiful!) set of responses to this one. It was very interesting to read about the different ways that many of you were brought up in comparison to me, so thanks for all the comments!

-------Nudity on DeviantART-------
Nudity comes up often as a discussion on dA, and I've wondered what my followers views on it were.

You can view the restrictions on nude art here: [link] (warning: possible graphic descriptions are used)

I'm a little torn on this. It's hard for me to describe what I view as "artistic nude" and "ffs I wish this wasn't on dA".

This picture is one I don't mind seeing, and would personally describe as 'artistic' (Warning: contains nudity) : [link]

This, however, I don't seen as being particularly artistic at all (and this is one of the BETTER examples of what I dislike seeing on dA. Again Nudity warning) : [link]

I'm not sure how I can put into words how I differentiate between them. The former seems to have more effort put into it, whereas the latter is more of just a glorified snapshot. The former can be looked at to have alternative meanings and symbolism, whereas I look at the latter, and just see a topless woman sat on her bed.

Of course, these are just my perspectives. Obviously everyone views art differently, and views are always going to clash on this subject in particular. Personally? I find that leaving a little to the imagination tends to make for a more attractive shot that full-on nudity. For example, if the woman in the latter picture had been wearing lingerie, I'd personally have found it more appealing.

The same goes for images of male nudity, though those are far less frequent on deviantART, as I'm sure you've all noticed! Perhaps I'm just prudish, but I find a gorgeous picture of a lingerie model or corset model significantly more attractive than full-on nudity. Am I the only one?

So, what are your views on it? What do you see as "artistic" nudity and just plain rubbish masquerading under the title of "art"? Do you think nudity should be allowed on dA? Do you think the current restrictions on it are strict enough? Or TOO strict?

Let me know what you think.

I've never really bothered to construct my own view on the matter, but after reading your justifications and seeing you examples I'd have to say that I agree. So I think I'll adopt a similar view to yours in future :)

I find certain arts of nudity incredibly beautiful. Certain poses, how a tattoo extends across the flesh, or how an emotion can just dazzle the picture. I do like the first picture shared, needless to say, the lighting, the rich red color and the woman of choice was phenomenal. While the second was a complete thing of showing off in my opinion. (Forgive how blatant I am) A big chest and pierced nipples is all some people seem to care about and I don't usually give a damn (Sorry guys xP) big and small all try equally with me and things to accent the sight like piercings just to me say:

"Hey lookie here!!!"

Not my kind of art.

The addition of lingerie can have many pluses. While some are very eye-catching and pretty, some are just downright wrong for pictures on DA. As a little extra note, more clothes gives more to the imagination while a complete lack is just like "Here ya go"

My two cents, heh, sorry if they don't mean too much.

Well, I personally am 13, and tend to say "Oh no no no" to those things. But whatever floats your boat, it's fine with me!! But something seen as extremely perverted and just taken for the hell of it, those sort of pictures I want to flag the crap out of. >.<

Personally, I think nudity on dA is fine as long as it serves a deeper purpose than just showing of your body. As long as there is an underlying artistic concept it should be fine. I think the rules on dA are fair in the fact that they do let a lot of stuff pass, because maybe what some consider smut others consider a beautiful and amazing work of art. Who is to say what's art and what's not? So, I guess people who are completely against nude art of any kind should probably turn their maturity filter on. Just saying. :)

I think I have to agree on you with this one... corsets and the like are far more appealing then just flat out nudes.

That's a tough subject, I have to agree I'd rather see someone partially naked with a piece of clothing rather than a full on. But it fully depends on the concept the picture is gone for, there are a few full on nudes I've seen that just used the body itself to cover certain areas or were posed in such a way that it actually gave a lot of meaning. Does seem like a lot out there are just abusing the fact DA allows this form of art to be posted and are just using it for self advertisement

I can't say I agree with taking it off entirely but I do agree there should be a bit of investigation into some of the more "hey look at my body" types that are posted. Kinda a tough subject, I know myself and the other staff on #DD-Catalogue had a misunderstanding a while back with accidently declining a nude picture that had recieved a DD and the artist had gotten rather offended thinking we didn't accept that form of art. I'm fairly sure they don't appreciate people abusing the category with non-artistic nudes just as much as others don't like looking at them, so it wouldn't really be fair to shut down an entire section of art just off the few that are making them look bad.

My mother went to art school and so I was surrounded by nude sculptures since before I can remember. I grew up drawing nude art (though it was, obviously, really shitty (and still is orz)) and so have no problems seeing it anywhere.

The second picture you linked to...well..technically it doesn't violate any of dA's rules, but I find it so tasteless. It's...just tacky and showing off a woman with weird piercings that make her look like a cow, in my opinion.

I don't really have a lot of opinion else on the topic though. Not any more than I'm sure plenty of people share and are telling you already. So that's where my personal experiance ends.

No... my opinion basically co-insides with yours. If there's effort and an attempt to make something beautiful and incorporating the human body, I can respect that. But just naked pictures you'd text to your boyfriend and you put 'em online... no, that doesn't count.

The way I differentiate it is, nudey photos are the ones made to show off how attractive the girl/guy is. Artistic nude is made to show off how attractive the deeper meaning and/or elements of the work (lighting, composition, coloring, etc) are.

I personally cannot stand a lot of the "artistic nude" on dA because unfortunately, I feel a lot of it is just nudey photos. ESPECIALLY when I see accounts of the models who take strictly or mostly nudey photos, because then I just want to scream, "Okay. We get it. You're attractive; do you have to take off your clothes and show it off to the rest of the world?!" Hardly ever are those photos taken just to be taken. Usually it's to validate their attractiveness through the praise they get from them. It's annoying and stupid.

The first picture is what I would call artistic, the other one... That is usually what you can see at the front cover of the adult magazines these days D'x
