Kitacon, and Killing My Legs for Charity

Journal Entry: Tue Apr 17, 2012, 3:11 AM

Ramblings...

Kitacon was good.
I don't know what else to say on that. XD
Pictures will come when I get them ^_^

-------LEGS, YOU WILL FEEL THE BURN!-------
So, Jenn and I will be joining Laura in her Ten Mile "Big Walk" for the Alzheimer's charity ARUK.

Alzheimer's
Named after Dr Alois Alzheimer, who observed the disease in 1901, Alzheimer's disease affects about 500,000 people in the UK, and an estimated 35 million worldwide.

Typical symptoms of early Alzheimer's include:

- Regularly forgetting recent events, names and faces.
- Regularly misplacing items or putting them in odd places.
- Confusion about the time of day.
- Disorientation, especially away from your normal surroundings.
- Getting lost.
- Problems finding the right words.
- Reduced judgement, for example, being unaware of danger.
- Mood or behaviour problems such as apathy, irritability, or losing confidence.

Many older people suffer from this disease, one of them being Laura's grandfather, who she is very close to. It is with him in mind that the three of us are undertaking the Big Walk. Alzheimer's is something that any of us could potentially suffer from in the future, and it is heartbreaking to see someone close to you go through it. While ARUK is a charity within the United Kingdom, their work and research is relevant on a global scale, so it is not just the UK that you would be assisting.

I know lots of you have been very generous recently as it is, donating to our Gaming Marathon, but this is just as worthy a cause, and I sincerely hope people will have the means to support us once again. Thank you ^_^

My nanna Alzheimer's as well, and, although she's not at an advanced stage yet (she can remember all of us perfectly, but doesn't remember that we've visited her :(), it's still very upsetting to witness her memory deteriorating first hand. I'll definitely look into donating when I get back from abroad next week, since it's something that could definitely benefit from more money for research. Best of luck to you three (and your legs)!
Glad to hear you had fun at Kitacon! (: looking forward to the photos~! I was going to go with my friends but couldn't due to a family holiday (that I'm still on right now XD; )

Alzheimers is the one thing that legitimately scares me about growing older.

I only saw you very briefly at Kitacon in the registration queue (and after I'd got out of there I'm pretty sure I didn't see you again afterwards...) which was a shame! Otherwise I would have come and said hi as it's been bloody ages XD

As a side note, I cannot tell you how grateful I am to see you all raising awareness about Alzheimers. My grandma suffered from it before she passed away a couple of years ago and I really appreciate that you're taking the time out to raise money for it.

Glad Kitacon was fun! :D I really need to figure out if we have an event like that here in America, at least close to where I live. I would do it in a heartbeat. ^^ I wish you, Jenn and Laura good luck!~

I am so glad to here you will be walking for this charity! I have gained a whole new level of respect. My grandma who I practically live with and is very close to me suffers from Alzheimers, she isn't that bad right now, only diagnosed a little over a year ago. But it kills me everyday knowing that by the time i turn 17, she wont remember me and wont be at my graduation. I am only 15 and I try to set up events to raise money for this cause but everyone over looks it. I wish people knew the severity of it. Thank you oh so much. <3
