I just suffered shock at advice I saw being given to a convention goer of how to keep her energy levels up while at a convention...
- Hold soda in your mouth for a few seconds before swallowing it, as your mouth absorbs the sugars quicker
- Drink OJ with sugar added to it
- Honey sticks
Basically, the advice given was "SUGAR, AND LOTS OF IT!"
I don't know what people are taught about health in the USA, but clearly it's VERY different to the UK. People, PLEASE don't live on sugar at a convention! Not only is it bad for your teeth, but bad for your health, and it's NOT the best source of energy there is!
Eating regularly and healthily, especially wholemeals, will provide you with a much healthier and long-lasting source of energy. Sure, you may get a brief rush from a Red Bull, but you'll have a crash as well. I know none of us take the best care of ourselves at cons, but at least TRY to get in a decent breakfast, lunch and dinner. And drink plenty of water!!
And definitely don't advocate an "all sugar" diet to others. Pocky and Monster are not meals.

Seriously, holding soda in your mouth to absorb the sugar faster? SERIOUSLY? Ugh.
Dear con-goers: If anything, eating sugar at a con will have adverse effects--you crash big-time. Please stop doing this.
Thank you for posting this, Kelley. I'm sure this journal was, sadly, a wake-up call for some people. :I
Yes, that was stupid advice. No, it doesn't have anything to do with what people are taught about health in the UK vs. US. Most American cosplayers realize you need to eat actual food. It has nothing to do with country. It just means there's some stupid people at a convention who think sugar is a good source of energy because they didn't pay attention in their health class.
Sorry to rant, but this really annoyed me. Not the journal itself, that was good. People who do think sugar is a good convention diet could benefit greatly from this. The comments were what annoyed me. >_<
No wonder half the cosplayers seem to complain about health problems when this is the advice they're given.
This person just seems like... I don't even know.
The conventions I frequent even promote it themselves with a 1, 2, 5 "rule" (it's more a suggestion of a rule you should apply to your self): 1 shower a day, 2 meals a day, 5 hours of sleep a day. Just as a bare minimum to keep yourself from actually passing out.
I was talking to someone at the con I went to last year and couldn't believe he hadn't eaten all day. Just had some pop. I was shocked (hungry too... you didn't have water or bathroom breaks during the costume contest and it was over 3 hours long). I had eaten a good breakfast, had sushi for lunch (there was a session where you paid $5 to learn how to do it and got to keep your homemade california rolls and whatnot), and supper we left to go to a nearby restaurant... and I was STILL hungry! We had water bottles we were carrying around with us (dressed them up to look like lon lon milk to go with our Zelda attire) and tried to eat as much healthy fare as possible. I recommend bringing carrot sticks and apples along. Apples are great for energy, and healthy! Plus there is some water in them if you think about it. I always had some food on us in case we needed something healthy. Sugar is NOT a good option. You crash too quick.
Luckily I stay at my house during cons and I get good homemade food
I don't live off of sugar anyways, I would get so sick.
Anyway electrolyte enhanced waters and whole grain snacks (fruit is fine too) are the things to have with you. God, I live....3 hours away. I could be there. right now....Maybe I'll try to go down tomorrow. Maybe.
It could kill ya!
Geeze. People these days.
Drink lots of water, eat GOOD food. Not just snacks.
I stayed with my uncle during a convention and I ate three meals a day, do it. You'l feel a LOT more energetic.
Admittedly I do drink pepsi max and water.
As expensive as at-con food can be, that's why you should stock up with stuff to take with you. I always bring a cooler of fruits, some bread, and peanut butter, and cheddar goldfish. They keep me going.
I eat fruit at a convent every day and have watter false with you^^
