Ramblings...

I just suffered shock at advice I saw being given to a convention goer of how to keep her energy levels up while at a convention...

- Hold soda in your mouth for a few seconds before swallowing it, as your mouth absorbs the sugars quicker
- Drink OJ with sugar added to it
- Honey sticks

Basically, the advice given was "SUGAR, AND LOTS OF IT!"

God.

I don't know what people are taught about health in the USA, but clearly it's VERY different to the UK. People, PLEASE don't live on sugar at a convention! Not only is it bad for your teeth, but bad for your health, and it's NOT the best source of energy there is!

Eating regularly and healthily, especially wholemeals, will provide you with a much healthier and long-lasting source of energy. Sure, you may get a brief rush from a Red Bull, but you'll have a crash as well. I know none of us take the best care of ourselves at cons, but at least TRY to get in a decent breakfast, lunch and dinner. And drink plenty of water!!

And definitely don't advocate an "all sugar" diet to others. Pocky and Monster are not meals.

The Usual Stuff

I have the bad habit of not eating anything at cons. I pretty much just run on adrenaline all day and then crash when I get home. Soooo wont be doing that again.

It hurts me to know that some people actually believe that stuff. Even just taking high school human biology teaches you that stuff is a bunch of lies, or at least it does here in Canada.

Seriously, holding soda in your mouth to absorb the sugar faster? SERIOUSLY? Ugh.

Normally I bring food along with me, but for some retarded reason they banned outside food and drinks at the con this year (which you already know :P) so all the poor people that dont have money to spend on ridiculously expensive food get to suffer and rely on just the water fountains....

Anyone who relies on soda for the entire con and not water is an idiot in my book. Just two foods that saved me last Metrocon when my stomach was acting up were APPLES and YOGURT! And dont forget Maruchan cup ramen and pears. Many people say ramen isnt healthy food but OMG those cup ramen were like a GODLY BEAST to me! @W@

I don't know what to say, aside from that's some of the simplest terms I've ever heard good advice come in.
Well done.

PS--as a side-note Public Service Announcement: POP AND COFFEE WILL DEHYDRATE YOU. SODA IS NOT REFRESHING, IT DOES NOT REPLENISH YOUR BODILY FLUIDS. STAHP.

Yeah, this isn't really an American dilemma so much as an idiot dilemma. And unfortunately, a lot of con-goers (or at least the ones I've encountered) tend to be idiots. OR tend to ACT like idiots and willfully ignore common sense in the pursuit of "having fun." e.g., "I'm not going to eat ANTYHING but sugar this weekend and I'm not going to sleep at all and Pocky wheeeeee." I don't know that they actually think this is a good idea so much as...they're just stupid, and they think it'll be fun to do this.

It's not.

Dear con-goers: If anything, eating sugar at a con will have adverse effects--you crash big-time. Please stop doing this.

Also, shower.

Thank you for posting this, Kelley. I'm sure this journal was, sadly, a wake-up call for some people. :I

Really? Can we stop with the "so ashamed of my country" thing?
Yes, that was stupid advice. No, it doesn't have anything to do with what people are taught about health in the UK vs. US. Most American cosplayers realize you need to eat actual food. It has nothing to do with country. It just means there's some stupid people at a convention who think sugar is a good source of energy because they didn't pay attention in their health class.

Sorry to rant, but this really annoyed me. Not the journal itself, that was good. People who do think sugar is a good convention diet could benefit greatly from this. The comments were what annoyed me. >_<

Sugar is by far more damaging to your health than fat and messes up your insides.

No wonder half the cosplayers seem to complain about health problems when this is the advice they're given.

Most congoers I've run into here are smart enough to know that you should eat real food and sleep during conventions in order to not die >>
This person just seems like... I don't even know.
The conventions I frequent even promote it themselves with a 1, 2, 5 "rule" (it's more a suggestion of a rule you should apply to your self): 1 shower a day, 2 meals a day, 5 hours of sleep a day. Just as a bare minimum to keep yourself from actually passing out.

I thought it was the 621 rule. 6 hours of sleep, 2 dinner-size meals a day, and 1 shower.

It might have been 6.

It's been a while since I payed attention to that kind of thing at cons tbh, since I know how to keep myself alive and don't need them to tell me xD

AMEN!!! Thank you!
I was talking to someone at the con I went to last year and couldn't believe he hadn't eaten all day. Just had some pop. I was shocked (hungry too... you didn't have water or bathroom breaks during the costume contest and it was over 3 hours long). I had eaten a good breakfast, had sushi for lunch (there was a session where you paid $5 to learn how to do it and got to keep your homemade california rolls and whatnot), and supper we left to go to a nearby restaurant... and I was STILL hungry! We had water bottles we were carrying around with us (dressed them up to look like lon lon milk to go with our Zelda attire) and tried to eat as much healthy fare as possible. I recommend bringing carrot sticks and apples along. Apples are great for energy, and healthy! Plus there is some water in them if you think about it. I always had some food on us in case we needed something healthy. Sugar is NOT a good option. You crash too quick.

Luckily I stay at my house during cons and I get good homemade food

I don't live off of sugar anyways, I would get so sick.

And sh*t like this is why America is portrayed the way it is in shows like Hetalia. I'm so ashamed of my country.....

Anyway electrolyte enhanced waters and whole grain snacks (fruit is fine too) are the things to have with you. God, I live....3 hours away. I could be there. right now....Maybe I'll try to go down tomorrow. Maybe.

I normally have a good breakfast and tea but often miss out on lunch as I don't feel that hungry (probably too much pocky for me! but if I can get my hands on some bread/fruit etc I'll have a nibble) and I normally have plenty of energy despite missing a meal, although I don't recommend that for anyone else, I just get really hyper at cons and never run out of energy until it's all over!

I try to make sure I eat breakfast as lunch can sometimes be a little skimpy with food ( if very light breakfast slightly more at lunch) and to eat something proper for dinner in the evening.
Admittedly I do drink pepsi max and water.

As expensive as at-con food can be, that's why you should stock up with stuff to take with you. I always bring a cooler of fruits, some bread, and peanut butter, and cheddar goldfish. :) They keep me going. :D
