British Humour

Journal Entry: Wed Feb 29, 2012, 2:20 AM

Ramblings...

Today, I wrote out a post of about 1,000 words or so about why people get offended by British humour, but shouldn't. I then deleted it. Why?

Because I realised that in talking about the nature of British humour, and why we're able to happily joke about things like celebrity deaths, racism, sexism, tragedies like 9/11, wars etc. ... I'd end up having people getting upset because I've offended them.

I've saved myself the hassle of this by deleting the post.

All I will say is that, if you can't handle Shock Humour, then you should always be wary of watching any form of British comedy. It's part of our comedic culture.

Otherwise, just accept that you might be offended, and when you are....stop reading, close the video, or change the channel. It's that easy.

Being from the U.S. I personally don't find 9/11 jokes offensive, in fact I've found quite a few of these jokes to be really funny. I also find some racist jokes to be really funny too and I'm asian. I find it really funny that the U.S. prides itself on being a free country when a majority of it's citizens will get angry with someone for simply exercising their right to free speech.

i'm so full of dark and dry humor, it's funny (HAHA A JOKE) anyway, people are always offended by something. Family guy has an episode where three girls are taking a picture together, and their faces are smooshed together, and then the become one big "fat" girl. I'm fat and i thought it was really funny, but on comments people are saying "i'm a girl and i'm offended". You're right, if people don't like it they should simply move along. People take things WAY to seriously.

well, I'm german and I love british humor! but I'm often called rude because of my sense of humor and it's also true that most germans don't have any sense of humor at all, so I think it's okay^^

I just don't think people always understand the acute sense of pessimism and disdain that many Brits have for... well, everything, but how we can also laugh at it and take the piss out of it. Same with the surreal elements that are in IT Crowd, The Mighty Boosh, Red Dwarf (well, the list goes on, really...)
Then again one really God-awful Brit-com is Pete VS Life. I can't stand that blokey blokey football commentary shite.

dude, British humour is the best. I love Monty Python, Red Dwarf, all those types of things. I think it's similar to the type of humour Australians have. We have a very, as you said, "Shock Humour" style of comedy and I can see how it can go too far, but some people get offended by it too easily. People need to relax

I really love British humor.
Even did a Monty python skit for my grad concert.
It's so in your face that it's funny!

That is so true...if you don't like something, why bother to keep watching it or reading it, etc...? I know in DT you and Jenn said that the whole "fork handles and headlight fluids" thing was from a British comedy show you both enjoyed and that does sound hilarious. But that's just it...some things are funny, others aren't. People need to learn to deal with them, whether they be funny or not.

I actually enjoy British humor over plain American humor. >> :XD: It's straight forward with a bit of a..laid back sense, I guess. ^^;

That's strange, I find British humour the least offensive haha xD. Personally American humour is much more offensive to me. British humour is the best :3
